Martin Lawrence started doing comedy shows in the Washington, D.C. area and worked odd jobs to make a living. Comedian Ritch Snyder saw his act and suggested he make connections in New York. Lawrence moved to New York City and started performing at The Improv, a popular comedy club. He won a performance spot on Star Search after appearing at The Improv, which caught the attention of executives at Columbia Pictures Television. They offered him his first acting job as Maurice Warfield in What’s Happening Now!!. Although he did not win Star Search, it helped him get his start in the entertainment industry.

After What’s Happening Now!! was canceled, Lawrence found small roles in various films and TV series. His big break came in Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing as Cee. He went on to star in House Party, Talkin’ Dirty After Dark, and Boomerang alongside Eddie Murphy.
