Mayim Chaya Bialik was born on December 12, 1975, in San Diego, California. Her parents, Beverly, and Barry Bialik, were Jewish immigrants from the Bronx, New York City. Bialik’s great-grandmother’s nickname, Miriam, inspired her name, Mayim, which means “waters” in Hebrew. She was raised as a Reform Jew and later became a Modern Orthodox Jew. Bialik graduated from North Hollywood High School in 1993 and received a deferred acceptance to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience with minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies in 2000.
After completing her undergraduate studies, Bialik pursued a doctorate in neuroscience.
