Later, her father moved to Baja California – a Mexican state located on the Baja California Peninsula. Vanessa has an older sister named Sophie. The mother of these two girls worked as a shipping clerk at a company that traded electronic goods. 

It was in the year 1990 when her mother married Stephen Laine who happened to be the middle manager at the very electronics company the former was working at. The mother of Vanessa and Sophie, Sofia, changed her last name to Laine after the marriage. In 2000, Vanessa changed her name to Vanessa Marie Laine, although, she was never officially adopted by her stepfather.
