Samuel Leroy Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C. His parents were Elizabeth Harriett and Roy Henry Jackson, but his father struggled with alcoholism and lived away from the family. Jackson grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he was raised by his mother, who worked in a factory and later became a supplies buyer for a mental institution. He was also raised by his maternal grandparents and other extended family members.

During his childhood, Jackson attended several segregated schools and graduated from Riverside High School in Chattanooga. He was musically inclined and played several instruments in the school orchestra, but he developed a stutter, which he learned to cope with by pretending to be other people who didn’t stutter. He still struggles with stuttering on some days.

Initially, Jackson planned to pursue a degree in marine biology and attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. However, he discovered his interest in acting after joining a local acting group to earn extra credit in a class. He changed his major and co-founded Just Us Theatre before graduating in 1972.
