Fannie Ann Little (1941–2002), his mother, worked as a postal service employee in North Carolina. Nas has a brother named Jabari Fret, a rapper popularly known as Jungle. The name “Olu Dara” was adopted and brought into the family by his father. He adopted it from the Yorubas, and the phrase means “spiritual guide”. Nasir in Arabic means “helper or protector”, whereas “bin” translates to mean “son of”.

Nas was born in Queens and raised there until his parents got divorced when he was a young teenager. His neighbour, Willy “Ill Will” Graham, first introduced him to hip-hop music by playing tapes for Nas. Since his parents’ divorce led to him dropping out of school after eighth grade, Nas taught himself about African culture with the splinter group of the Nation of Islam named Five-Percent Nation and the Nuwaubian Nation. He also used to play the trumpet as a youngster and started to write rhymes early on.
Career
He got his start in music as a teenager, using the stage name “Kid Wave,” with the help of his neighbour to be his DJ. In the late 1980s, Nas met Large Professor and worked with him frequently in recording studios. Nas frequently utilized the recording studio to create music, but none of his works was ever made public.
Nas signed with Columbia Records in the early 1990s, and his debut album hit store shelves in 1994. The Source praised it as the best album of that year, leading to more hits for Nas. After constantly releasing albums over the years, he sparked a public feud with Jay-Z in 2001 by dissing each other through songs.
